Road's End

ROAD’s END

Road’s End blends homesite with the existing hillside and surrounding ecotypes. Layered screening separates home from road, partially concealing the primary axis of the exterior—its entry walk. Ornamental grasses lining the walk travel through the transparent architectural corridor; these grasses engulf a Not Vital sculpture and, coupled with perennial interjections, provide movement, color, and ever-changing shadows to be reflected in its surface. Anchoring the secondary axis, a bed of ferns and astilbe embrace a contemplative Plensa sculpture. The view to the Shadow Mountain / Ruthies Ridgeline is maintained, with soft foreground planting countering its strong line.

An architectural corridor spans two ecotypes—an evergreen forest to the south and gambel oak-dominated shrubland to the north. Plantings introduced at the forest seek to enhance the moodiness of its rich green tones and deep shade, while those introduced at the shrubland maintain the experience of the expansive view. A deconstructed grid of native understory—aspen, serviceberry, chokecherry—fills in the points between, negotiating an authentic, easy transition between architecture and site.
